Youth Leadership. Character Development.
   Academic Tutoring. Adult Programming.

Neighborcorps.
Neighborcorps is a youth service-learning program unique to the Belair-Edison Healthy Community Coalition. The
program outlines three primary goals for high school youth:

1. to engage and mobilize youth as leaders;
2. to provide an opportunity for youth to learn the process of social and community revitalization; and
3. to build character and promote personal development.

The premise of the program is to unify and develop everyday residents as civic leaders, and link them with the
resources necessary to better themselves, their families and their community. Students learn the basics of planning
community development projects, including creating budgets, setting outcome measurements, and progress
evaluation techniques. Neighborcorps students meets on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at Doris M. Johnson High
School #426.

Since October 2006, these brilliant young people have:

Umoja Computer Homework Club.
The Umoja Computer Homework Club beautifully reflects a
partnership between the Coalition and the New Life United
Methodist Church. The 12-station computer lab is open
Mondays through Thursdays from 3:00 - 6:00 pm.

Youth in grades 3 - 8 flock to the site to:

   Art on Purpose (www.artonpurpose.org)

Additionally, high school youth earn community service hours
and acquire leadership skills tutoring students in reading and
math. Various software programs, including MS Student 2006,
teach youth vital technology skills and assist students with
research and homework assignments.
